McAteer Family – Spring 2026

Biography

Both Tom and Liz come from artistic families and have artistic backgrounds, so it’s only natural they would continue this with their own children.
In a past life Thomas was a children’s book illustrator. He worked primarily in water colors but dabbled in oil and digital. His painting style ranges from fun whimsy to pixelated oil paintings. Now he expresses himself artistically through writing and playing his own songs on guitar, gardening, & woodworking. Whether hand crafting a beautiful nightstand using only lockjoints or re- finishing and re-engeneering an antique rope bed from a full to a king, Tom has not stopped creating.
Liz received her BFA in illustration from the University of the Arts in 2007. While her passion is children’s book illustration, she’s been widely unsuccessful at getting published. Liz paints primarily in acrylic (if there is ever any time). Before having their 3 wonderful children, Liz worked as a journeyman at Willet Hauser Architectural Glass. (The studio actually created the stained glass at Grace prior to Liz’s tenure there). While at Willet Liz painted glass, selected glass, built & restored stained glass windows for churches and colleges all over the country. Now Liz finds her creative outlets through mural and stencil work around their house, gardening, sewing, and coloring and crafting with the kids.
Ruby does not stop drawing. When her younger sister Imogen was born, Ruby found comfort sitting next to Mommy & Immy, drawing her little heart out. At 3 years old, Ruby already had a style, oval heads, oval hair, correct color pallet. If she drew Elsa, you knew it was Elsa. Now, at the age of 10, Ruby loves to draw full scenes. Using her own reference books, Ruby creates elaborate detailed illustrations of animals in their natural habitats and people around the world. Recently she has begun drawing portraits of family members.
At the young age of 6 Imogen is an amazing 3D paper artist. Imogen blows her parents away with his 3D models of camera’s, phones, and scenes, all made completely of paper and with no instruction. Imogen loves to draw and paint, and is especially good at creating a feeling through her pictures. She has also inherited her dad’s musical flare.
Occasionally 4 year old Felix takes a break from creating droids and Star Wars speaders out of Legos to draw or paint. While he hasn’t perfected the art of drawing a storm trooper just yet, he has a beautiful color sense and ability to convey the emotion behind natural weather patterns. His parents particularly enjoy his “Thunderstorm” and “Volcano” pieces.
